Saturn Retrograde – June 4th 2022

Retrogrades are so common that when you look at the astrological forecast you’ll find that we’re almost always experiencing a retrograde of one kind or another. In fact all planets being direct is far more rare than a retrograde, as they happen once a year at most, sometimes not at all.

So what is a retrograde? Each planet has it’s own rhythmic course around the sun. The further away, the longer it takes for a planet to finish it’s solar year. For example: Mercury takes less than three months to circle the sun, whereas Pluto takes 248 years. This means that the planets of our solar system aren’t rotating the sun in unison, making it so that the Earth can ‘surpass’ them thus creating the illusion from our Earthly perspective of that they are moving backwards.

In essence the way we view these celestial bodies is merely from the perspective of Earth, rather than how are actually behaving.

Retrogrades are neither good or bad, they just are. What I mean by this is that while they have the tendency to shake things up they also have the power to put things into alignment. It’s only a matter of how you look at it.

Below is some information on Saturn as a deity and a planet to help you understand the symbolism, and thoughts surrounding this energy.

The God

Saturn is the father of the Gods in the Roman pantheon, and the equivalent of the pre-Olympian Greek Titan God, Kronos. He was revered as the God of Time and was associated with agriculture, wealth, and liberation. The height of his reign was regarded as the Golden Age of abundance and peace.

The symbol most associated with Saturn is the Sickle, maintaining the importance he held over Roman farmers. In the poem Theogany by Hesiod, the sickle symbolizes a link between the divine and natural worlds.

The Planet

Saturn has been known as far back as Babylon, and the farthest planet from earth that we can see with the naked eye. Greeks and Romans associated it with agriculture, thus naming it Saturnus/Kronos. Making it the father of the planets by offering masculine, outward energy that helps provide structure and discipline in our lives. This is also often considered to be karma and debt.

This planet’s associations are very much in tune with how the God Saturn was revered, and when you see where it lies in your birth chart, as well as where it’s transiting for you, the affect it has on those areas of life will make a lot more sense.

It takes about 2-3 years for Saturn to move through the 30 degrees of a zodiac sign before moving on to the next one. It also takes about 29 years for Saturn to make a full rotation around the sun. You will often find around the age of 30 you will go through what is called a Saturn return, where the planet is conjunct to your natal Saturn. This often shows up as a true metamorphosis into adulthood. I personally see the first Saturn return as the mother/father phase of life.

Saturn in Aquarius

Aquarius is known as the humanitarian of the Zodiac, and is considered to be a bit of a rebel. They say opposites attract, but do these energies play well together?

Saturn has been transiting in this sign since 2020, and we have already felt the energy of it’s RX the past two years. However, aspects hold a huge importance in the differences between the energy from the past two years, and this year.

Our first Aquarian Saturn RX happened in the first half of the sign. This showed up as new and excitable energy. Due to world events of the time, this showed up as cabin fever of sorts. Everyone was ready to stretch there legs, and have adventures, and we were forced to do it in a safe manner. Which if that’s not prime Saturn and Aquarius energy idk what is.

The second Aquarian Saturn RX happened in the middle degrees of the sign, and moved backwards to the early degrees of the sign. We saw this come about with more freedoms for adventures as things opened up a bit more. I personally went on three camping trips that summer. The energy was a bit more stable, but had a similar affect as the previous summer.

This last Aquarian Saturn RX is in the later half of the sign, going from 25 back to 18. Later degrees signify a sense of maturity, so while we will have that same free spirited energy from Aquarius, it will be also come to us in unexpected ways. This is a time where mirrors will be held up to us, and Karma will be sorted out. Which sounds ominous, but in reality it’s here to help you get your life sorted and put you on the right track, like a fatherly figure would. Think of this time as tough love. Side note: Everyone’s RXs will be different. What’s wild for some is not for all.

Support yourself during this time:

Understanding your natal chart and the house this RX affects is a good place to start in understanding how it affects you. For example, this RX will affect my sixth house, and move backwards into my fifth house towards the end of the retrograde. I can easily interpret this as my health, and work habits are to be affected in the first half, and towards the end, creativity, spirit, and self expression are to be hit during the fall.

This is a time to focus, reflect, and restructure ourselves. To stand grounded and breathe. When Saturn transits into Pisces next spring we will then see the seeds we planted now grow and dreams flourish.

Herbs and oils that may be useful during this time:

  • Clove
  • Chamomile
  • Black Pepper
  • Ginger
  • Thyme
