“In the Middle of the Earth, in the land of Shire
Lives a brave little hobbit whom we all admire
With his long, wooden pipe
Fuzzy, wooly toes
He lives in a hobbit-hole and everybody knows him
Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins.”
– Leonard Nimoy
When we decide on a story to journey into we first consider the kind of story we’re innately feeling pulled towards. Sometimes this is based on the seasons, and if the book seasonally aligns with time of year we’re in. For the Hobbit, I would say Autumn, or Spring into Summer is a better time of year, especially with themes surrounding Midsummer, and the atmosphere of the book doesn’t exactly scream Winter in this context. However, sometimes we choose books based on the feelings the story promises, and for the Hobbit, a cozy fireside read is exactly the feeling this radiates with. And that’s why this was our book for the month of December.
The Curriculum:
Our book list for this year is heavily influenced by Blossom and Root’s Second Grade Language Arts: Fantastic Journeys and Perilous Quests.
While our curriculum for Language Arts is Blossom and Root at it’s core, the crowning jewel of our literary journey is the Family Learning Guide from Hearth Magic which gave it more of the enchantment that is necessary with such a fantastic adventure.
Why the two?
Blossom and Roots strength aligns more with refining specific skills needed within this subject. Vocabulary, written worksheets, and a couple projects here and there in between. Hearth Magic on the other hand offers themed integrative learning experiences that go beyond just language arts. Their learning guides touch multiple subjects and truly help bring the story to life for your child.
Paired together, these two resources are a powerhouse and offer a phenomenal experience for the whole family.
Second Breakfast, anyone?
If you aren’t enjoying copious amounts of good food while reading the Hobbit, are you actually reading the Hobbit? One of my favorite parts of any Hearth Magic guide is the recipes involved inside. With the Hobbit, however, it’s just appropriate!
This month we enjoyed several Hobbit themed treats that have also become favorites we will carry with us into the future. Here is a cookbook that is highly suggested to use for your own adventures
Handcrafts and Art

If you were to ask me what my favorite part of homeschool is, I would say it’s the allowance to be creative with my kids, and watch their creativity blossom. The activities in the Hearth Magic guide are, for lack of better words, magical! This past month, Audrey finally picked up basic sewing skills.
Hobbit Doors

This craft wasn’t in any of the guides, but luckily for us Hobbit Door crafts went viral and because it was December after all, we made hobbit door ornaments, inspired by the this tiktok below.

From Dwarves to Dragons, to riddles and warring elves and trolls. This book alone is a fantastic adventure to read. Having these resources with me this past month, has made all the more enchanting.
